If you are creating website and the sole purpose of it is to show it to your friends or family members or the web site is intended for a particular group of friends of yours, you need not worry about search engine optimization at all. But! If you have created the site for marketing or earning money from it, then traffic is the most important matter that you should keep in mind and hence comes the matter of SEO.
First of all I should tell you that we generally confuse between two things:
Search Engines (E.g. Google) and
Directories (E.g. Yahoo)
We sometimes say the Directories a Search Engine. Though both of them provide search services. But directories are different than search engines.
A Search Engine uses special software robots, called spiders or crawlers, to retrieve information from web pages. This type of search service is called a "spider-based" or "crawler-based" search engine.
Whereas a directory uses human editors to manually place web sites or web pages into specific categories. A directory is commonly called a "human-based" search engine.
Now say some one is searching a website similar to yours. If in search results your site ranks 300 or more, it’s hard to think that even a single person out of 100 will come to your site. If no people come to your site no income you are going to generate!
So, What should you do?
Of course, the only thing is to improve your website’s ranking instead of crying or increasing your B.P.

Try to go though the following points:
In brief Search Engines search for keywords in your
web page. The first thing to do is search for the similar
keywords and find out the frequency of hits of the keywords.
When you find 25-30 most frequently used keywords on the topic,
you can start writing the contents of your web page. Keep
in mind that having the most powerful keywords in your page
is very useful. There are some tools available on the net
for this purpose. I personally recommend using the
Wordtracker tool for this. It’s a very easy and very powerful
tool for this purpose.
Now don’t ever forget to make a title and headings which include the most significant keywords. Of course this doesn’t mean that you do not care about the contents of the site. Contents of the site are also very important.
Make the pages of your web site as well linked as possible.
Try to deep the design of the webpage as simple as possible.
Very few Search Engines now a day give importance on the Meta Tags, so you may neglect the Meta Tags if you think so.
Also keep writing blogs containing links to your site and post them in as many popular blog sites as you can. This helps the Search Engines easily find your website and rank them.
Always keep in mind that merely knowing the keywords is not enough. The place where you put them, the way you organize contents of your page are also very important.
